Generally, outplacement services are contracted by the employer that is doing the laying off.

These services exist to help those employees like yourself make a swift transition to a new job as soon as possible.

Employees can also pay for outplacement services by themselves if their employer doesn't offer the service as part of the severance agreement that they obtain as part of their termination.

Normally, outplacement consists of career counseling and advising either as part of a group, or just as an individual, one-on-one. Many laid off employees can be unfamiliar with the current job searching techniques, depending on when they had last had to job search, and so job-search training is also provided.

They also get resume help from the outplacement company and get their cover letters written or rewritten. Some firms will also apply for jobs for the employee, and provide job leads and follow-up counseling and advice.

Generally, executives utilizing these services end up using them longer due to the experience they possess, and the need to find a job opening that reflects that experience or matches their requirements.

The cost of running these services can range from over $10,000 for senior executives, to $1,500 for hourly employees. It really depends on the outsourcing company's rates and the experience and needs of the individual.
