Millennials Are the Least Engaged at Work, Study Shows

A new report by Gallup shows that Millennials are "checked out" of their jobs. This group of tech savvy, selfie taking individuals were born between the years of 1980 and 1996, are reported to have the least amount of motivation, and are the least engaged of all employees in a business.

They are also showing less willingness to stay in one job for a long period of time. This is a large problem for many companies, as 57% of organizations view employee retention as a problem. Across the board, about 22% of new hires leave their jobs within 45 days of being hired, and this costs the business between 30% and 150% of the employee's salary.

Gallup believes the problem is with the inconsistent mindset commonly found in younger generations. Most have trouble finding what interests them the most, and many are not interested in building a long-term career. Consequently, they find jobs that can give them a relatively easy payout, but do not offer an intellectual challenge.

The report shows that 21% of Millennials left their job in the past year, and only 29% of Millennials felt engaged at their jobs. Only half believe they will be with the same company a year from now, meaning that half of the nation's workforce plans on moving around.

Many experts believe that the manager-employee relationship is a large factor in employee retention. Opening up a dialogue between you and your employee can be a crucial part of making the worker feel appreciated as an individual. When managers provide consistent feedback and positive messages, the employee reports being more engaged in their job.

Even adding a human resources branch in your office can work wonders. Human resource professionals can help serve the needs of the businesses, including the needs of each employee. They also offer an unbiased resource for the employee to voice their concerns, in case they have any.

Hiring human resources consultants can help drive the success of your business tenfold. Human resources consulting firms offer not only methods for employee retention, but they are professions when it comes to restructuring, outplacement services, and talent acquisition.
