A Beginner’s Guide to Outplacement Services

For any business owner, caring for your employees is a must. Over half of all companies -- 57% -- view employee retention as a problem, where 22% of new hires leave their jobs within 45 days of being hired. In 2015 alone, there were 2.7 million workers who voluntarily left their jobs, a 25% increase compared to 2013. But what happens if you need to fire or lay off an employee?

The best thing to do is to hire outplacement services. Why? Read on to learn more.

What is an outplacement company?

An outplacement company offers career coaching to employees who have recently been laid off. This service is paid for by the former employer, and usually aids individuals with their job search efforts along with executing and structuring their career after they leave their job. These individuals work with outplacement consultants for weeks or even months, as determined by their employer.

Why should you offer outplacement services?

Offering the use of a consultant is a great way to show that you care about your ex-employee. Many other business owners have used outplacement consulting services in the wake of a layoff, where it wasn't the employee's fault for losing their job. This method can also be used if one of your employees wants to transition out of your company into a different career path.

What should you look for in an outplacement company?

As with any other investment you make as a business owner, it is important to invest in an outplacement service that you can trust. Things to look for in the firm include:

  1. 1. Background: make sure they have the proper credentials for your needs.
  2. 2. Process: you need to make sure that you understand exactly what you are getting yourself into. Some questions to ask include "As the previous employer, do I stay informed throughout the entire process?" and "Does their way of communication suit my needs?"
  3. 3. Location: if you must be present during the outplacement process, where is the company located and how will they handle things?
  4. 4. Capacity: how many people can they offer services to? If you are laying off many employees, it is good to double check this before hand.
  5. 5. Their success rate: have they been successful as a consulting firm? See if you can find any reviews on past successes to see if they are effective at what they do.
